French Bulldog Potty Training

Congratulations on your furry new addition! The snuggles are amazing, right?! One aspect of puppyhood that isn’t as darling is the process of potty training. Here are a few tips we’ve learned over the years:

  • Frenchie puppies cannot hold their bowel movements for much more than 10-15 minutes. u ntil they are 4-5 months old. While this can be tough for crate training, this can be a great advantage if you have consistent feeding times.

  • Allow the pup to eat and drink at consistent intervals. After eating/drinking, wait a couple minutes and then take the Frenchie pup outside to where they will use the bathroom.

  • Go to the same place each time. Use the same phrase each time “Go potty,” “Do your business,” etc.

  • Bring (small) treats to reinforce when they use the bathroom at the correct place.

  • Never scold a puppy for having an accident. If you feel the need to correct, carry the poop outside and bring the pup. Reinforce that the Frenchie poops there by leaving the poop at that chosen spot and using your puppy potty phrase.

  • Many Frenchies are particularly offended by being asked to use the restroom outside during inclement weather (note: inclementis up for personal interpretation by each pup). Depending on the disposition of your Frenchie a rain jacket and booties may be worth consideration on these days.

Bottom line: be patient and consistent. You’ve got this!
